Introduction

After the success of the E J Luck sale (MB48 in archive) many small collections have been consigned to make up this present auction. Therefore we have a varied offering as a result of this spring clean! Provenance from major sales is given along with the ticket where extant. As a codicil to the Luck sale, more oddments keep turning up, including the Bury Lancashire token (no. 57) and the Rock Ferry numbered pass and some of the communion tokens. With regards to the communion tokens offered here, Andrew Macmillan had a few duplicates and oddments so those are listed here (ref. ATM in the description). This really is the last of that great collection and even though the quality of some of the tokens may be not be the greatest, they fill gaps and come as usual with all the notes.

We begin as usual with the British tokens from 17th century onwards. Several choice silver proof strikings of the 18th century from Warwickshire and Buckinghamshire are offered as well as rarities like the Spence halfpennies. Plenty here too for Welsh collectors, including the Merthyr silver shilling (153). We rather liked the Sheffield ticket for T Youdan's Promenade. A Theatre owner, in 1867 Youdan established the first Football competition with a donation of £2. There's some rare mining checks including lamp checks. We have a great run of Southen and West of England pub checks with some from the Welsh borders. Co-ops, markets, farms, schools, clubs, military issues - we have some of all of these plus many advertising checks and countermarked coins. The foreign section repays reading as there are a good number of transport and Co-op society pieces there plus a whole run of USA "good for" tokens. There's a selection of Egyptian tokens - not the usual ones. Armenia, Assam Shanghai, Australia (Crystal Palace!) Hudson Bay Co. in Canada, Gabon as French West Africa, Lebanon, Swaziland and Thailand - all have entries for very interesting and unusual pieces. If you're a thematic collector but normally only look at the GB section, do have a good look at the foreign!

If you're new to this type of sale, please read our terms and conditions. Remember there's no buyer's commission and we reduce bids to 10% over the next bidder. If you're the only bidder you get the lot at the first price, which is our reserve which is conservative. The second price in the catalogue is our estimate of the price. We've revised our fees for taking PayPal and credit cards but debit cards, cheques and cash incur no surcharge. Photos of some of the tokens, especially the rarities and the more pictorial ones, will be herecon the website. We hope you enjoy looking through and find pieces that you just must have for your own collection. Good luck and send in your bids as early as you can!

A word about the layout please use the index below to get around the catalogue. As to prices - the first column of prices is the starting price or reserve below which we will not sell as it's conservative, the second is our estimate of what we think the token will sell for but you might have to bid more on some lots to get them. Remember we always reduce your bids to 10% above your nearest rival - and if two bids are identical the first one received wins the lot. So bid early and bid high to be sure of success!
