Introduction
Such a mixture!! Tokens from Medieval times, 17th century, 18th century, 19th century and later tokens, transport checks, military, mining, minting, telephone, clubs and pubs, farms and markets, communion and refreshment checks. Not forgetting imitation spade guineas, countermarked and engraved coins that have found another use, a few medals and some books on token coinage. Oh, and there's toy money, advertising pieces, tickets and passes for entertainment and workplaces. It's the other side of money - the non-official but necessary stuff that gains you admittance, discounts and ease, and teaches history in a way that dry dates cannot.
In terms of significance and rarity, there's a pass for Covent Garden Theatre (lot 204) for 83 years, an early American communion token (lot 568), a salt barrel token from St Barts in the Carribean (lot 683) and a group of 3 tokens from the Spanish Civil War (lot 704). We have a very good run of Irish tokens, tea checks, unofficial farthings, tickets and passes from several sources - ideal for beginners but also good for those of you who need to fill in the gaps in your collection.
As usual we don't confine ourselves to British tokens but include pieces from all over the world. Check through the catalogue online, use the index below and enjoy. Please be sure to send your bids in early - in the case of a tied bid, the first person whose bid we receive wins.
Consignments of collections, your duplicates, accumulations wanted for future sales. Please contact us (see homepage) for further details.
