General British and World Tokens, tickets and passes, Isle of Man rarities

A collection of Scottish Communion tokens

Part IV Andrew Macmillan Collection - Religious Medals and Tokens

Where to begin? There's lots of interesting stuff here, sacred and profane, but because we've incorporated at least 3 collections into this sale you will need to go through the catalogue thoroughly as there are strays dotted around. We start conventionally enough with British lead tokens and trade tokens, followed by tickets and passes and specific themes. We have more Isle of Man than usual, a good run of French shell cards for maisons de plaisance or bordels which we translate as brothel tokens - the British make no distinction whereas the French do apparently. A general collection has been consigned to us (lots 535-635) which forms a mini-catalogue in its own right. From another collector is an interesting offering of Scottish Communion tokens (411-534). Evangelical tokens, charity tokens church money and commemorative medals form the fourth and final part of Andrew Macmillan's great collection plus a relisting of his unsold foreign communion tokens (from lot 636-end). These are mainly but not exclusively Presbyterian and include a very rare brooch for the Disruption (lot 716)

commemorating the split from the Church of Scotland in 1843 of the Moderator and 474 ministers who resigned their livings.

If you’re new to this type of sale, please read our terms and conditions of sale.  Remember there’s no buyer’s commission and we reduce bids to 10% over the next bidder.  If you’re the only bidder you get the lot at the first price, which is our reserve.  Photos of some of the tokens, especially the rarities and the more pictorial ones, will be  here on the website.   Prices realised are sent to all bidders whether successful or not. We hope you enjoy looking through the catalogue and find pieces that you must have for your own collection.  Good luck and send in your bids as early as you can!
