The themes of the following historical medals are war and peace as propaganda, satire, heroism, tragedy and and the triumph of hope, generosity and resolve. They merit study so that we don't repeat the mistakes of the past. The medals are grouped loosely according to country (not necessarily in chronological order), beginning with Germany and the Austro-Hungarian Empire at the start of the 20th century.

Austria: Conrad Von Hotzendorf portrait by Hofman ; rev. standard text for Red Cross Austria fundraiser 1914-1915 - although feted as a military strategist, he promoted war against Serbia and was instrumental in the defeat of the Austro-Hungarian army. Iron 45mm. GBP 28

Hungary: Miklos Horthy, Regent of Hungary 1920-1944 by Z S CZISZER. Served in the Otranto Raid 1917, guided Hungary into an alliance with Nazi Germany but faltered and ultimately was deposed. Base metal 60mm.

Germany, Rupprecht, Kronprinz von Bayern (Bavaria) silver commemorative medal 1935. At this time Rupprecht still entertained slim hopes of becoming King of Bavaria - he was the last Jacobite heir to the thrones of England and Scotland and was eventually exiled to Italy under the Nazi regime. AR 55mm. GBP 135
Hungary; Red Cross charity medal - Agriculture medal 1918 - harvest by Lazlo Rapolti, yellow metal (bronze) or zinc 55mm. uniface GBP 48, unusual.  

Germany, Satirical anti-British medal by P Leibkuchler, Dedicated to Vice-Admiral Sir Dudley Rawson de Chair, Commander 10 Cruiser Squadron Northern Blockade 1914-16. Cast iron medal, two seals helplessly watching an eagle which flies past with a fish in its mouth, symbolising the ineffectual command of de Chair as the German food convoys slip past his blockade. 82mm. VF, metal stable, spot of rust - on reverse at 9 o'clock GBP 95
