The themes of the following historical medals are war and peace as propaganda, satire, heroism, tragedy and and the triumph of hope, generosity and resolve. They merit study so that we don't repeat the mistakes of the past. The medals are grouped loosely according to country (not necessarily in chronological order), beginning with Germany and the Austro-Hungarian Empire at the start of the 20th century.

Germany, Music commemorative medal, 1914-15, Wagnerian in style, medallist's monogram JC 50mm. bronze, VF GBP 38
Austria - Box medal with paper roundels with patriotic, sentimental poems and prints, celebrating Austro-Hungarian and German victories from Belgium to Carpathia. 1914-15. Made by C M Schwerdtner, Wien (Vienna) A really interesting object in excellent condition, box made of galvanised iron GBP 195
Germany, Rupprecht, Kronprinz von Bayern (Bavaria) silver commemorative medal 1935. At this time Rupprecht still entertained slim hopes of becoming King of Bavaria - he was the last Jacobite heir to the thrones of England and Scotland and was eventually exiled to Italy under the Nazi regime. Hungary; Red Cross charity medal - Agriculture medal 1918 - harvest by Lazlo Rapolti, yellow metal (bronze) or zinc 55mm. uniface GBP 48, unusual.  
Hungary: 1914 award badge for valour; Penzintezetek hadikorhaza; 'si vis vitam da sanguinem' Arms of Hungary on one side, an old man aided by a young woman. 48x28mm. base metal (pewter); rare GBP 120

Germany, Satirical anti-British medal by P Leibkuchler, Dedicated to Vice-Admiral Sir Dudley Rawson de Chair, Commander 10 Cruiser Squadron Northern Blockade 1914-16. Cast iron medal, two seals helplessly watching an eagle which flies past with a fish in its mouth, symbolising the ineffectual command of de Chair as the German food convoys slip past his blockade. 82mm. VF, metal stable, spot of rust - on reverse at 9 o'clock GBP 95
