  Introduction

“Oh my ears and whiskers, how late it’s getting!” The Alice in Wonderland medal in the Dutch section of this catalogue has a great portrait of the White Rabbit - and pocket watch. I feel a great affinity with the rabbit. It’s been several years since our last contemporary medal catalogue but I hope you will agree that it’s been worth the wait. There are some splendid medals here, many rarely seen on the aftermarket.

Leading the offering are medals issued by the British Art Medal Society (BAMS). Some are being sold on behalf of BAMS and are the bequest of Peter Bagwell Purefoy to the British Art Medal Society (marked clearly in the catalogue ex PBP). So please remember that the Society benefits from those and bid generously! The other BAMS and British medals are from various collections and include several Duttons: his magnificent Windy Day bronze and the Marks of Time series. The Lynn Chadwick Diamond is an iconic BAMS issue and the present example is one of the most attractive we’ve handled in 20 years. This is altogether the best selection of BAMS medals we’ve had in years and a great opportunity to buy early BAMS issues as Peter was one of only three collectors to buy every medal from the beginning in 1982.

I’m pleased to be able to offer not just medals from the Monnaie de Paris but also from the VPK, the Dutch Medal Society and several medals from Germany, featuring medicine and homeopathy. Finally, in a grand flourish I’ve scoured the shelves for Portuguese, Bulgarian, American and other medals which I hope will delight you.

Pricing is always difficult in a young market. Many medals have very modest reserves (the first price) to get you bidding but the estimates (second price) are what I think the medal’s worth at present, bearing in mind historical auction records and achieved retail prices. So I urge you not to be too timid if you want a particular medal - we reduce bids either to 10% over your nearest rival’s bid or to the reserve if you’re the only person interested. Unlike most auction houses we do not charge a buyer’s commission - please look at the terms and conditions by clicking on the link and use the bidding sheet for sending in your bids. We photograph everything and publish online here on our website. Other viewing is by arrangement.

I hope you enjoy browsing through and find many fascinating objects just as I have.
