NETHERLANDS - 17TH & 18TH CENTURY GUILD MEDALS The Dutch Guilds had similar Medieval origins to the London Guilds. However their medals, mostly for membership identification, start in the late 16th century but do not survive Napoleon's disbanding of the Guilds. The trade links with London make us think that the Dutch medals were prototypes for the late 18th century Livery badges. For further information see Wittop Koning's De Penningen de Noord-Nederlandse Ambachtsgilden, published in 1978. |
