19th and 20th century medals

Medals are made of bronze and of date contemporary with original design, unless described otherwise. Imperfections are noted but medals are in general extremely fine condition and the large photos show up the dust very well - must start a spring clean...!

France, Henri Dropsy (1885-1869), The Family. Just like the Holy Family, the carpenter works while mother looks after the baby; the Latin translates as: by her smile, begin to know your mother. copper (cuivre on edge) VC mark (Canale) 72x65mm. date? early style , nEF rare GBP 110 cf. 1923 La famille de l'agriculteur, struck medal catalogue Dropsy 1964 Monnaie de Paris expo. Netherlands: Den Volkeren Vrede (Peace unto the Nations), the Hydra vanquished; reverse translates - a greater order is being born out of the fullness of time (paraphrased from Virgil's Eclogues IV). Stunning medal produced after the Great War. Artist unknown, classic 1920's deco style. condition as photo, bronze AE 60mm. nEF GBP 195
France, (Cycling) Tour d'Aix en Provence, Office de Tourisme 1938 1er Junior Alphonse Poulle Portrait of Mariane to represent the French Republic; by F Rasumny after Alphee Dubois 60x46mm. bronze plaquette gVF GBP 30

France, Ville de Paris by M Delannoy, the ship of state which symbolises the French capital. Art Deco style circa 1925-35, marked on edge 1ARGENT, so silver, heavy, 62mm. GBP 70

Note: not in CGMP, so most probably a private commission from the Ville de Paris made at the Monnaie de Paris.

France, Sculpture Architecture, a bronze uniface cast by Henri Dropsy, no edge marks, 98.5mm in diameter, lovely dark brown patina, not in CGMP, no. 119 in Dropsy catalogue 1964, as made, GBP 125

 

France, F. Vernon Compagnie des Chemins de fer de l'est, silver AR41mm. marked on edge 1ARGENT with cornucopia; matte surface a little scuffed so VF, original card box GBP 65

(Czech) Sucharda, Cech

Bronze plaquette, 60x67mm, certainly has some age although may not be an original striking but mid 20th century.

 

According to legend three brothers: Czech, Lech and Rus travelled east ; at the Dnieper River Rus stopped with his tribe (Russia) Czech and Lech continued until they came to a fertile land - Czech climbed to the top of Rip hill in Bohemia and decided that this was the place for him and for his tribe (Lech continued and founded Poland)
M.S. Lafayette, largest French mail ship; obverse the revolutionary politician Lafayette 1757-1834; bronze medal by Delannoy, 1930, for Compagnie Generale Transatlantique. 68mm. GBP 48
France M.S. Champlain, commemorative of both the explorer in 1603 and the mail boat of 1932, by Raymond Delamarre, 68mm, nice condition, GBP 65
France WW1 Hopital Auxiliare 117 - Lycee Janson de Sailly 1914-1919 by A. Biaggi- presentation medal, recipient's name inked on reverse John... under a scene in the operating theatre. This Parisian School is famous in France but during the First World War was used as a hospital. Latterly it's also infamous for an attack on 2 students of Tunisian origin. Bronze plaquette 71x51mm. scarce GBP 50
P Lenoir Education de Saint Louis - St. Louis 1215-1270 originally soldered on to a stand, this would have been a prize medal or scholastic award, 61mm. bronze EF apart from solder GBP 30

France, Crucifixion, by Leon Drivier, SFAM issue 1946, large bronze cast 105mm. GBP 250

Drivier is better known for his monumental sculpture, including the sculptural block Joie de Vivre, Palais de Chaillot, Paris.

GB 700th Anniversary of the Foundation of Liverpool 1207-1907 large bronze medal by C J Allen (Pinches).  King John giving the charter which made Liverpool a city to kneeling man; seal impression with Liver bird  above; rev. ship in full sail with motto of Liverpool around Deus Nobis Haec Otia Fecit (God has provided us this tranquillity) 1207-1907.  bronze 64mm.EF GBP 85
France, L Alloy: Life Insurance La Nationale centenary 1830-1930, compagnie d'assurances sur la vie, formerly Compagnie Royale, Paris. Obverse shows the 3 Compagnes Royales d'Assurances, Deparcieux 1787, and Duvillard 1817, the third symbolised by the seated woman. 69mm. GBP 60
France, Marcel Renard, Le Rhin one of a series of medal on rivers, 1939 58mm. struck bronze, high relief, GBP 80
France, L Patriarche, 1915, Chambre de Commerce, Rouen, Normandie; reverse records increased tonnage handled on the river. silvered bronze, 70x51mm. GBP 45
France, Surveillance Industrielle de l'Armement - Athena by PM Dammann, given to IG- M. Vernet 1964-1967. GBP 35
